Agenda

RankMarvel has been founded from the urge to provide a standardised, community-driven reference for naming and listing the greatest Marvel comics ever.

The voting system

The ratings for each comic that you see listed on the site are an average of the user votes that have been submitted. Meanwhile, the ratings are also weighted before displayed. How? Primarily, the rating of each comic is weighted based on how many votes it has received. This is a Bayesian weighting very similar to the one used by imdb. The effect is to draw each rating a bit towards the center value (e.g., towards 5.0). A comic that has only a few votes will be drawn strongly towards the center, while a comic with many votes will be drawn less. This makes it "harder" for comics with very few votes to be at the top of the charts.

On top of weighing the comics by number of votes, there is also a secondary weighing that aims to rewards the prolific and fair users on the site. This weighing may not do a whole lot of difference, but the best way to maximise the weight of your votes is to vote on all the comics that you know, and to utilise the entire range of vote options fairly.

Because of this rather sophisticated weighing, RankMarvel does not exclude any user votes from the Top listings, and comics are (at the time of launch) allowed to enter the top lists with just 3 votes. This might be changed to harsher criteria later, but definitely will not be as drastic as is done on imdb.
